Start by booking an appointment with your mechanic a few days before your trip. Request for a maintenance package with an oil change, mechanical inspection and maybe tire rotation. Include also important items like the brakes and suspension components. It is crucial that your car is in good order for a road trip. Here are some more tips and suggestions on how to prepare your car for a trip.
Fluids: Check fluid levels in your car. This includes Engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, the brake fluid, antifreeze/coolant, and radiator coolant plus windshield washer fluid. The Engine oil and transmission fluid levels should also be taken into consideration. Ensure that there is always enough fluid in every domain to enable the car function without fault.
Battery: Check the battery of your vehicle and ensure it has clean terminals which are tight and not corroded. In case you notice any acid leaks, cracks or other damage, then replace the battery. A new battery may last from 3 to 6 years; therefore if your battery is around 4 to 5 years old, the good thing to do is have it tested before the trip.
Tires: Tires should be checked carefully including the spare tires. Inspect your tires for any signs of damage including wear and tears or bulges in the side wall. Ensure that the tires are not overly inflated in order to prevent a blowout. This can be done by making sure the tire pressure is set to the figures that are printed on the placard as per the car's manual. If you notice that the tires are too worn out, buy new ones and replace them. In case you need to replace your tires Mickey Thompson Tire manufactures offer a wide range of high performance tires that suit different terrains.
Lights: Make sure that the headlights, the blinkers, the interior lighting and all the electricals are checked. Faulty lights should be replaced. This is because they can be dangerous and might cause accident if you end up travelling at night. Ensure that the heater/ air conditioner works properly and change the air filter if you have not done so in a long while. Also fix any broken or rear view mirror before the trip.
Be safe: Keep a safety kit in your car for emergencies. If you have been using it, ensure you buy bandages, antiseptics, sticking plaster, basic medicines and creams. Ensure you are driving safely and follow the rules of the road. Stock your car with items that will make life easier while you are on the road.
