The first and most important thing is to make sure your car is serviced and taken care of. Make sure the oil is changed, all the fluids are filled up and your tires are in good shape.
The jack, in particular, is especially important. If it isn't working properly, you won't be able to do anything. So go through a trial run before you leave, and make sure you can lift the car up and down without a problem.
Every car, road trip or not, needs a good first aid kit. Not one of those free ones for signing up for a point card at the supermarket. Make sure it's a big one that 's got plenty of stuff in there. Also, make sure there's a book that explains how to handle things in case of an emergency.
Also, you'll need some kind of an emergency kit. This should include an emergency cell phone that is only used for emergencies. You can leave it turned off to protect the batteries. A disposable phone from a convenience store is fine. Also, you'll need some non perishable food items, as well as plenty of bottles of water. This will keep you in good shape should you be stranded for a couple of days.
Naturally, you're going to need some entertainment for the kids. If you think you can get away with using toys and games that you already have, think again. You'll need to get some new games, and some new toys. That way, you'll keep their interest for much longer.
Of course, you'll need plenty of snacks and drinks. Make sure the snacks are put into small zip lock bags, so they don't go through a whole box of cookies in twenty minutes. Also, give them small boxes of water to drink, so they don't overfill themselves and need to stop at the toilet every twenty minutes.
When you follow these simple rules, you'll have a much better time on your vacation. Just keep it safe, and have fun.
